Stamp duty on a Malaysian property purchase, explained
Transfer duty is tiered: 1% on the first RM100,000, 2% on the next RM400,000, 3% on the next RM500,000, and 4% above RM1,000,000. At RM600,000 that is RM12,000. The loan agreement is charged separately at RM5 per RM1,000 of the loan, minimum RM10 — RM2,700 on a RM540,000 loan. Foreign buyers pay a flat 8% on residential property. Note that the exemption for first homes is all-or-nothing at RM500,000: a RM500,001 purchase gets no relief at all.
